Rug Size Guide

Choosing the wrong size is the single most common reason a rug gets sent back. Five minutes with a tape measure saves a lot of bother.

The short answer

Room Usual size
Living room, sofa against a wall 160 × 230 cm
Living room, larger or open-plan 200 × 300 cm
Under a dining table (4 seats) 160 × 230 cm
Under a dining table (6 seats) 200 × 300 cm
Bedroom, double bed 200 × 300 cm
Bedroom, runners either side 80 × 250 cm each
Hallway 80 × 250 cm
Kitchen 80 × 250 cm

Living rooms

The usual mistake is going too small. A rug that only sits under the coffee table makes the room look smaller, not larger.

Aim for at least the front legs of every seat resting on the rug. That visually ties the seating together. If the budget allows, all legs on the rug is better still.

Leave roughly 20–40 cm of floor visible between the rug edge and the walls.

Dining rooms

The rule here is firm: the rug must extend at least 60 cm beyond the table on every side. That is what lets a chair be pushed back without its rear legs dropping off the edge — which is both annoying and how rug corners get damaged.

Measure your table, add 120 cm to length and width, and buy the nearest size up.

Bedrooms

Two approaches:

One large rug under the bed, extending 50–70 cm past the sides and foot, so you step onto wool rather than floorboards. For a double bed that usually means 200 × 300 cm.

Two runners, one either side of the bed. Cheaper, easier to clean, and works well when the bed sits against a wall. 80 × 250 cm each.

Hallways and runners

Leave 10–15 cm of floor visible on each side — a runner that spans wall to wall reads as carpet, not as a rug. Stop the runner short of doorways so doors clear it.

Round rugs

Round rugs suit round dining tables, reading corners and any space where you want to break up a room full of rectangles. For a round dining table, add 120 cm to the table's diameter.

Before you order

  1. Measure the actual space, not the furniture.
  2. Mark it out on the floor with masking tape or newspaper, and live with it for a day.
  3. Allow for our size tolerance. Hand-woven rugs vary by up to ±3% from the stated size — about 5 cm on a 160 × 230 cm rug. See our Return & Refund Policy.
